The challenge was immense - COVID was ravaging the world, and our agency was responsible for the care of medically fragile children, with over 6,000 nurses visiting their homes daily. As the manager of analytics and engineering, I was entrusted with the task of developing a system that would not only track the spread of COVID among caregivers, patients, and family members, but also account for added risk factors like vaccinations and susceptibilities.
My approach leveraged the power of automation. By creating a system that dispatched a text message to every employee each time they worked, we could effectively track and monitor the situation. This was further bolstered by systems that enabled nurses to check and report symptoms in patients.
The gathered data was then put to work. Using this valuable information, we created comprehensive dashboards and a web portal where employees could submit test results and vaccination cards. This wealth of data not only provided us with real-time insights but also became a tool for our scheduling team to make informed decisions.
With this system in place, we were not only able to comply with federal and state regulations, but also ensure minimal human intervention in the entire COVID tracking process. This enhanced our agency's ability to provide safe, effective care during a global health crisis, while also ensuring the wellbeing of our invaluable staff.
